The Handyman's Pocket Book: Bent Nails.

One of the chief reasons why a nail bends over when being driven in is a dirty or greasy hammer face.  It often happens when gluing up that glue get on to the face, and it is an almost sure cause of the nail bending over.  Keep a piece of glass-paper handy and rub the hammer face on it if there is any suspicion of dirt.
