The Handyman's Pocket Book: Turps Substitute.
This (often known as white spirit) is used widely in paint manufacture, in stains for woodwork, and in wax polish. It is quite satisfactory if free from grease. The latter upsets paint, and may leave an objectionable deposit on wood if used in stains. In wax it may prevent a shine. To test, soak a piece of blotting paper with it and leave to dry. Good quality substitute will dry out without residue, whereas a greasy mark will be left by unsatisfactory type.
