I was intrigued. I had to investigate:

Bluebottles on My Marmalade (1982) and Up the Tyne in a Flummox (1987) both highlighted the exploits of his fantastical Wallsend characters, such as poet Herbert Mangle and butcher Arbuthnot Wotherfoot... As he wrote of himself in the foreword: "All of his characters are ineffectual, maladjusted, repressed, unsociable and unloved. They are all himself."

I had to google Wallsend, too.

Now I is very edumocated about obscure English comic writers and the geography of northern England. Well, maybe not VERY. Maybe not even edumocated. Maybe just google-o-cated.

I serialised 'Further Up The Tyne in a Flummox' on this very blog!
Check the Leonard Barass tag.
I was captivated by Barass's stories during the 80's when they were broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
I now have all the shows on my spare iPod set to constant random replay.

(I'm a bit of a fan).
