My New Toy.
I've finally laid hands on a decent wind up gramophone!
It's a HMV Portable Gramophone model number 102 and it's in mint condition.
I've had a collection of 78's I've been waiting to play for some years now.
As the sun was setting I thought Moonlight Serenade by the Glen Miller band fit the situation perfectly.

Oh! That's a beauty! I had to turn down the Vera Lynne documentary on the Light Program to hear it properly; now I realise I really must find a portable number like that, the tabletop cabinet model is too bulky for picnics.
I was lucky to get it!
On researching the model I found out that it must have the disc holder (to the right of the machine) to be considered complete.
The carrying handle needs very slight attention to reattach the leather but, other than that, it truly is mint condition.
I've got some Dame Vera recordings to try out tomorrow.
(I'm not in a hurry to play the Jimmy Young discs.)
I have been looking for one for years. I have a very small collection of 78's that I have not heard in a very long time.
I heard that very same tune (mp3) this afternoon while working in the shed along with others from the same time. They made me feel good when I was young and they make me feel good now.
